Master GardenerSM volunteers in Surry County will be hosting a summer gardening workshop series this year. The workshops will be held at the Demonstration Gardens at the Historic Courthouse located in Dobson (114 W. Atkins Street). Space in the classes is limited and registration is required. There is a fee for each class.

Class Schedule:

Herbs for the Italian Blend
Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.

Come join in the fun of learning how to grow, harvest, and preserve the five herbs needed for the Italian Herb Seasoning Mix. The Italian Blend can be used to flavor many different foods. Each attendee will receive an herb kit to take home containing the following herbs: rosemary, basil, oregano, marjoram, and thyme.

Location:     Edible Garden at the Historic Courthouse in Dobson (114 W. Atkins St.)

Class Size: Limited to first 20 to register.

Fee: $20 per person

Plants for a Drought Resistant Garden
Thursday, June 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.

Come and join us to learn about drought resistant plants that thrive in the Memorial and the Purple Heart Gardens outside of the Historic Courthouse in Dobson. Handouts of some drought resistant plants will be provided and all who attend will take home a small scarlet sage plant.

Sensitively Creative!
Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.

Landscaping can be fun and feed your creative side too! Come visit and play in our Sensory Garden and see for yourself. We will be learning how to prune a few landscape favorites- Crape Myrtle Trees and a not so ordinary arborvitae. Participants should bring a “unique” container to replant a “Sensitive Plant”, groundcover Mimosa, that will go home with them. Mention the code word “bypass” and get a special treat!

Inviting Pollinators to your Backyard

Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.

Did you know that many of our insect pollinators are in decline and at risk of extinction? Without our insect pollinators, we would miss many fruits, vegetables, and nuts, like blueberries, squash, and almonds . . . not to mention chocolate and coffee!

So come join us to learn about pollinators native to Surry County, gardening practices that protect and sustain our pollinators, and tips for creating your own backyard pollinator garden. Handouts listing pollinator-friendly native plants will be provided and all who attend will take home a small native plant.
