Collapse ▲The American Innovative Beekeeper Academy, founded by Mr. Ali Mousavi, is excited to present a Beginning Beekeeping Course in February and March 2024.
The American Innovative Beekeeper Academy was founded by Mr. Ali Mousavi of Mocksville, NC. He is an avid beekeeper and recently completed his Masters in Beekeeping from Cornell University, an institution that has a long and prestigious history in honey bee research. The goal of the Academy is to educate the public about honey bees and to train dedicated beekeepers.
Lecture-based classes will be held on Saturday mornings (9 a.m.- Noon) beginning February 17 and run through March 23, 2024, in Clemmons, NC. These five classes are designed to introduce students to honey bee biology, hive structure and function, types and materials of managed hives, honey bee health and management, and the human and agricultural interactions with bees. The goal of the Academy’s educational program is to educate the public about honey bees and their importance rather than simply offer a piece of paper for completion. They offer two different program pathways so that each student can analyze their own situation and goals for the future and then choose which program best fits their goals.
Program Option 1 is perfect for those who just want to gain new knowledge about honey bees and other kinds of bees so that they can help them with a good knowledge base. For this program option, there is no expectation for the student to obtain honey bees or work towards becoming a beekeeper. This program option will be completed in 5 weeks (mid-February through March). They need only to attend the five Saturday morning classes. There will be no required homework, exams, assignments, research projects, or presentations for this option, but students pursuing this pathway are encouraged to participate in community events to assist the Academy in its goal of educating the public.
Program Option 2 is ideal for those who are seeking new knowledge about bees and eager to learn the depth of science related to honey bees. Students are encouraged to put that knowledge into practice and work towards becoming a beekeeper. Students in this pathway will complete homework tasks and take exams (on the 6th class meeting, March 23rd) based on the lecture materials. The entire course pathway will be completed in about 14 months, which is roughly equivalent to a college course in beekeeping. In monthly meetings (in person or via Zoom) topics addressed include practical workshops aimed at hive construction, bee yard placement, smoker lighting and use, hive inspection, and guided group research projects. Through these interactions (at no extra charge), we offer unprecedented, intensive mentoring during the student’s first year as a beekeeper to help them tackle and problem-solve the many challenges and facets of beekeeping (hive management, swarm control, disease and pest detection and management, queen rearing, honey production) and help students succeed. Satisfactory completion of assignments, exams and presentations is expected, as is participation in community service events.
