Collapse ▲On Monday, September 18th Smart Start Kaleidoscope and N.C. Cooperative Extension, Brunswick County provided engaging activities for the Play and Learn parents and children from the four area Kaleidoscope groups.
Eleven parents and fourteen youth under the age of 4 participated in hands-on learning with the Kaleidoscope team, the Expanded Food Nutrition and Education Program (EFNEP), 4-H Youth Development, Consumer Horticulture, and NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers.
Parents were introduced to two easy and healthy recipes and learned about the classes and resources the Expanded Food Nutrition and Education Program Educator, Angie Lawrence has to offer. Participants were also introduced to the learning kitchen and training room available to Brunswick County citizens that share a love for learning. The EFNEP program teaches the importance of a healthy diet as well as the importance of moving our bodies. Angie led Play and Learn participants through a series of stretches learning how a plant grows.
After the Stretches, 4-H team Leianna Hatcher, and Jamie Lester read the Hungry Caterpillar and provided a coloring sheet for the little ones. Then the Horticulture team, Taylor McDaniel and Krystyna Ochota led the families on a scavenger hunt through the beautiful Botanical Gardens which are educational, demonstration gardens that show Brunswick County Citizens the possibilities for their own yards. There are 16 different demonstration gardens. Youth and their parents looked for the caterpillar and the butterflies in the pollinator garden. They also spotted leaves, flowers, and worms in the edible garden and enjoyed the rocks, stumps, and trees in the children’s discovery garden. Just to name a few of the magical places to visit in the Botanical Gardens.
4-H will be celebrating 4-H Week October 1st – 7th, check out our Brunswick County Facebook page for 4-H Workshops and Activities. For a tour of the Beautiful Botanical Gardens, you can drop by anytime OR join the Master Gardeners in the gardens on October 14th from 9-12.
