Hello, this is Donna Teasley, horticulture agent with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Burke Center.
Honeybees are one of the most important insects on the planet and their role in pollinating food crops is an important one. Without the honeybee many of the foods we eat everyday would be very limited or even non-existent. Beekeeping is a popular hobby and now more than ever, we need more beekeepers to ensure that our honeybees remain plentiful and in good health.
The Burke County Beekeeper’s Association is holding a bee school for beginners on four consecutive Mondays in February. This school guides beginners through all aspects of setting up and maintaining bee hives. Each participant will also be assigned a mentor who will work with them throughout the first year.
The first meeting will be held in person at the Burke County Agricultural Building at 6:00 on February first and the remaining three classes will be presented online via Zoom. There will also be some follow-up field days later in the spring. The price of the school is $50 and this includes all educational materials plus member ship in the Burke Association as well as the state Beekeeper’s Association.
