Description: This is the largest commercial vegetable grower event in the region with a high quality educational program put together by vegetable extension specialist/agents at NC State University Cooperative Extension. There will also be a trade show and a fundraiser that supports student scholarships. The program will include presentations on many different topics to help vegetable growers. The final program will be completed in December 2018. Topics will include such things as Management of Foliar Diseases of Tomato, Using Chemigation to Manage Phytophthora Blight, Breeding for Late Blight Resistance and Tolerance to Bacterial Spot and Verticillium Wilt, Evaluation of Tomato Lines for Late Blight Resistance, Flavonoids in Tomato, Evaluation of Insecticides for Key Pests of Fruiting Vegetable Crops, Native Natural Enemies on Biological Control of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, Growing Industrial Hemp for Cannabinoids in Western North Carolina, to name a few. There will be a sponsored lunch and awards program at noon on Thursday. Pesticide credits will be offered.

Description: The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety rule is now final. The rule establishes science based minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption.

If a fruit and/or vegetable grower grows more than $25,000 annually (including all sales from farm food and feed commodities), he or she will need to attend one compliance training and will be required to keep specific records for their farming operation. There will be training offered on Friday, October 19 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Surry Community College Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain. There is a $50 fee. Pre-registration is required.

Bring: paints, paint stripper, pesticides, weed killers, drain solvents, gasoline, dry cell batteries, oil, acids, thinners, solvents, anitfreeze, pool chemicals

Don't Bring: ammunitions, radioactive materials, unidentified materials, explosives, medicine syringes, LP & propane gas cylinders, infectious waste, automotive type batteries

Label all containers, close all lids tightly, cushion glass bottles. This disposal day is for household products only. The only exception is pesticides. Commercial and household pesticides will be accepted.
