Increase Your HDL
Most of us know that we do not want to have high cholesterol levels (total greater than 200). However, we need to remember that there is a “good” type of cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), which is beneficial and our body needs.
HDL sends LDL “bad” cholesterol to the liver and out of our body. Therefore, having a higher level of HDL (higher than 60) can help us have less risk of heart disease.
The following are a few tips to increase or boost our HDL levels:
- Choose healthier fats. (Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated)
- Stop smoking.
- Eat a healthy diet. (Whole grains, nuts, legumes, fruits and veggies, fatty fish)
- Increase physical activity. (At least 30 minutes of moderate activity daily)
- Lose extra weight. (Maintaining healthy weight can also reduce LDL)
