2020 Herbicide Auxin Info (Dicamba and 2,4-D)

2020 Auxin Herbicides – Best Management Practices Training
Due to continuing issues with Dicamba & 2,4-D off-target drift across the country, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has continued the revised labels for dicamba products registered for application on Xtend soybeans and XtendFlex cotton. One of the requirements is mandatory training for all applicators prior to use in 2020. Anyone who plans to use these products must have a pesticide license. If you are planning to use any XtendiMax, Engenia, or FeXapan as a weed control option in Xtend soybeans and cotton OR any Enlist Duo in Enlist cotton and soybeans you are required to attend the training.

This training, presented by NC State University Weed Specialists and organized in cooperation with N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will fulfill the training requirement mandated by federal and 24(c) labels of dicamba containing products registered for over-the-top use on dicamba-tolerant cotton and soybeans. The training will also meet 24(c) label requirements for 2,4-D choline containing products for over-the-top use on 2,4-D-tolerant cotton and soybeans in North Carolina.

Paraquat Info

Paraquat Training Requirement
All pesticide products containing paraquat-dichloride (paraquat) are restricted-use pesticides and require a pesticide license to spray. Trade names include, but are not limited to Gramoxone, Para-SHOT, Parazone, Quick-Quat, Firestorm, or Helmquat.

New labeling of these products (appearing as soon as December 2019) requires that any person who intends to use paraquat must be a certified private applicator or licensed in an appropriate category, and is required to successfully complete the “How to Safely Use and Handle Paraquat-Containing Pesticides” training. “Uses” includes mixing and loading the pesticide; applying the pesticide; and other pesticide-related activities, such as transporting or storing opened pesticide containers, cleaning equipment, and disposing of excess pesticides, pesticide containers, and other paraquat-containing materials. The paraquat training certificate is not required for purchasing the product, but a RUP (Restricted Use Pesticide) certificate or pesticide license is.

**Non-certified persons working under the supervision of a certified applicator are prohibited from using paraquat including any of the “use” activities mentioned above.**

The online training is being revised by the National Pesticide Education Center (NPSEC) and is expected to be available in early-January 2020. Spanish versions of the online training (both Mexican Spanish and Puerto Rican Spanish) are expected to follow the English version. However, applicators don’t have to wait until early January to complete the training; the current training is available and still valid. Access it online. Materials are also being developed for face-to-face trainings and should be available in early January 2020.

Once the certified applicator successfully completes the training, a certificate will be automatically generated. Per the new labeling, applicators are required to retain certificates of training completion. The training must be retaken every three years.

The EPA is allowing the sale of paraquat that is already in the channels of trade, so some paraquat available for purchase may NOT have the new training requirement on the label. Growers that currently have a supply of paraquat that does not have the new labeling listing the required training are not required to complete the training.
