It is always nice to receive both pictures and comments on the crop from a producer in the field. This particular grower from VA also raises a most interesting question about the dayneutral Albion. See my reply at bottom.
In general, weather conditions have been ideal for completing winter sanitation chores. Hopefully, as you have been completing your winter clean-up chores, you have been attentive to collecting some dead blossoms for mailing down to Dr. Guido Schnabel’s lab at Clemson? I did ask Guido the other day if he had any additional advice on collecting these samples, and he said to me yesterday that getting ” 30 to 40 flowers is better. Increases our chance to get 10 isolates for a complete test.” I know that I spoke to a grower who sent 20, and this was not quite enough.

Here are a few pictures of strawberries covered for two weeks in November then most of January and so far in February, though covers are off now.
Of my chandlers which have buds, (probably half of them), all buds have been zapped. There didn’t seem to be any difference between earlier row covered areas and later covered areas. In some ways I guess this puts me in a similar position as growers who had winter flowering just maybe not as bad as some areas.
What are your thoughts on leaving a cover on through the weekend on day neutrals? You mentioned in an earlier advisory that they could possibly have increased flower production with a cover this time of the year unlike Chandler.
I’m also planning to keep my Sweet Charlie’s covered though I’ll be prepared to double cover them later if need be.

Reply: I would possibly favor leaving the covers on the Albion. The row covers can serve to elevate the daytime highs on sunny days, as well as keep plants warmer at night. In theory that little spike in temp (from the cover) could enhance floral development with Albion. The temps really appear to be in a good range to do this – and, remind me of the situation we get in early Nov for the first two weeks — this is when row covers are often applied to short day types to enhance floral development (when daytime highs begin to slip below 60 F).
